Problem

DAIS approached me to illustrate a puzzle for a client to use as Christmas gift. The puzzle needed to be something that could be enjoyed by the recipient and their family over the break while also showing the global scale of their operation and of course a whole bunch of heavy machinery and equipment.

Solution

I started by developing a clean art style to represent the complex machinery in a friendly way. The goal was to have the machines and brands recognisable for the recipient but still fun and engaging for their kids.

I then focused on creating multiple scenes that could be place around the circle. These were full of family friendly simple characters and fun bright colours that aimed to show Components Only’s services on a global scale. Finally I tied these scenes together with aspects of the day to day life of the people that operate this equipment, layering backgrounds and little hidden details.

The team at DAIS handled all of the logistics of turning this into a puzzle, including fun die cut equipment and machinery shaped puzzle pieces and an additional clue hunt that resulted in prize for the first to solve it.
